#5 [00:04] <Lish> is there a known issue when running a server on XP?
#6 [00:04] <Kealper> Lish: no, it's a windows driver issue on that specific NIC

#9 [00:05] <Lish> But the guy is now convinced that it's an XP issue

#11 [00:05] <Lish> Gah. I just want to punch him in the face. This is getting annoying.
#12 [00:05] <Kealper> it's not just XP, it would do that on any Windows OS :/
#13 [00:06] <Kealper> you tried a VM?

#16 [00:06] <Kealper> ...
#17 [00:06] <Kealper> :/
#18 [00:06] <Starr> I'm having a buffer overflow problem not caused by my memory or ATI video card, i have no idea how to diagnose or fix it, can any one help me?

#294 [01:27] <DopeGhoti> one example is bitlbee and ratbox
#295 [01:27] <Kealper> yeah, i knew about half-ops but i wasn't going to add that since this network doesn't have them
#296 [01:27] <DopeGhoti> okay, that's two examples

#320 [01:32] <GreyVulpine> Alright, so, I've got a problem. IDE DVD burner's giving out bad burns. Can't read burns on any other computer, except for the one it was burned on
#321 [01:32] <GreyVulpine> Switched it out for a known good burner, does the same thing
#322 [01:33] <DopeGhoti> o.O
#323 [01:33] <xales> Decrease burn speed to 1x
#324 [01:33] <GreyVulpine> Switched to a different program, does the same thing
#325 [01:33] <GreyVulpine> Also decreased burn speed
#326 [01:33] <DopeGhoti> tried other media?
#327 [01:33] <DopeGhoti> I had a similar problem and later found it was a bad spindle of discs
#328 [01:33] <GreyVulpine> Haven't tried other media.
#329 [01:33] <GreyVulpine> But I'm positive the media's not the problem
#330 [01:33] <GreyVulpine> I've used the media on known good burners, and had good burns
#331 [01:34] <GreyVulpine> I'm thinking, possibly the IDE cable's gone bad... or the OS itself.
#332 [01:34] <GreyVulpine> This computer's running XP since early 2000s, haven't done a wipe since it's first install.
#333 [01:35] <GreyVulpine> Neither of which really explain the problem. Wouldn't a bad IDE cable just corrupt the burn altogether?
#334 [01:35] <DopeGhoti> boot up a LiveUSBStick; burn from there
#335 [01:35] <DopeGhoti> that'd test the hardware
#336 [01:35] <GreyVulpine> Hmm

#338 [01:36] <Kealper> i was unaware DopeGhoti was bootable
#339 [01:36] <DopeGhoti> GreyVulpine: also, and this may sound odd, but it could be a bad PSU
#340 [01:36] <xales> GreyVulpine: You said the computer that burns it can read it fine?
#341 [01:36] <GreyVulpine> Yes xales
#342 [01:36] <DopeGhoti> I've had a dodgy power supply causeing the _weirdest_ problems
#343 [01:36] <xales> Kealper: I used cfdisk and toggled the bootable flag
#344 [01:37] <xales> GreyVulpine: Can it read media burned on other computers?
#345 [01:37] <Kealper> those discs are something sane like CD-R or CD+R right?

#767 [03:12] <xales> mike__: Correct, no host-cloaking her
#768 [03:12] <xales> here*
#769 [03:12] <Jerub> ideally you want to be able to ban by the name they've registered as to nickserv
#770 [03:12] <Jerub> on freenode you can +b $a:Jerub
#771 [03:12] <Shadow386> change a nick, re-register
#772 [03:12] <Kealper> Shadow386: that wouldn't work to ban IPs, since clients would try to ban that mask when getting the user info
#773 [03:12] <Jerub> and that bans my account, no matter my nick at the time.
#774 [03:12] <mike__> than you have to buy some domain and server and connect over it xD

#1280 [12:31] <Eugene> Isn't this the place to go when you have problems with minecraft?
#1281 [12:31] <MinecrafterII> Yes, it should, but to make sure, you have a program that can open jar files as they are, you didn't 'unzipped' the jar?
#1282 [12:31] <combatplayer> it is, but mods aren't part of minecraft

#1304 [12:34] <Shadow386> MinecrafterII what is your issue?
#1305 [12:34] <MinecrafterII> This involves a step to get a mod working, namely deleting the meta-inf folder
#1306 [12:34] <semirotta> but
#1307 [12:34] <semirotta> nvm
#1308 [12:34] <MinecrafterII> whenever i delete the meta-inf folder, the program gets stuck on the done loading screen
#1309 [12:34] <semirotta> ...
#1310 [12:34] <Shadow386> What mod so I can redirect you?
#1311 [12:35] <semirotta> when i add new mod, there is no meta-inf so how i can delete it? ^^
#1312 [12:35] <MinecrafterII> there isn't any mod installed
#1313 [12:35] <semirotta> shadow i got it work already so ty
#1314 [12:35] <Shadow386> semirotta check the requirements and collisions to make sure there are no problems with the mods you are using
#1315 [12:35] <MinecrafterII> the only change i have made to all the files is deleting the meta-inf folder
#1316 [12:35] <Shadow386> Thats why
#1317 [12:35] <MinecrafterII> ?
#1318 [12:35] <Shadow386> you need the meta-inf I believe for vanilla with no mods
#1319 [12:36] <semirotta> collisions?

#1607 [15:28] <VoxelHead> mathias1: (smp/opyourself) If you cannot dig, place blocks, or generally do anything other than walk around near the spawn point, it's because you're not an op on the server.
#1608 [15:28] <mathias1> Some kind of config settings?
#1609 [15:28] <VoxelHead> mathias1: (smp/opyourself) Presuming that it's your server, you can either type 'op YOURNAME' on the server console, or add your name to the ops.txt file, and restart the server.

#2146 [20:11] <DopeGhoti> the dashes are arguments, or 'switches' for the commands. for example, the -l switch for ls changes the output (compare `ls` with `ls -l`)
#2147 [20:11] <simon> Ok, I think we should really handle this configuration situation. It gives me the ToS-style menu once again
#2148 [20:12] <DopeGhoti> if the switch is more tha one letter, usually it's denoted by two dashes, as in '--configure'
#2149 [20:12] * lahwran [lahwran@notlogged] has joined ##MineCraftHelp
#2150 [20:13] <DopeGhoti> the reason for that is, with the short switches, you can specify a lot at once (`ls -l -a -h` is the same as `ls -lah`), so you need too dashes so that the shell knows you mean '--configure' and not '-c -o -n -f -i -g -u -r -e'.

#2258 [20:41] <simon> lol how about I make a video of the guitar lick I made up while we were doing this?
#2259 [20:41] <oldtopman> DopeGhoti: I hesitated having him change the perms as I did not have to change mine.
#2260 [20:41] <DopeGhoti> I had the same issue; Java will (rightly!) not execute a .jar not marked as executable
#2261 [20:41] <DopeGhoti> Just as bash will not run a script not marked as executable
#2262 [20:42] <simon> Hey, how do I learn about all of this stuff?
#2263 [20:42] <DopeGhoti> experience
#2264 [20:42] <oldtopman> But the javas that Mojang releases are already marked as executable
#2265 [20:42] * DopeGhoti isn't kidding- the best way is to just mess around with the OS and learn by doing
#2265 [20:42] <simon> I feel like there's somewhere where I should start, though.
#2266 [20:42] <simon> Like don't know anything about syntax
#2267 [20:42] <simon> And I wanna say it's just because I only started dabbling like 2 days ago, but still
#2268 [20:43] <DopeGhoti> simon: look for some Bash scripting tutorials
#2269 [20:43] <DopeGhoti> (bash is the name of the shell in which we've been plinking commands this whole time)
#2270 [20:43] <oldtopman> simon: I got good at linux by just using different distros.
#2271 [20:43] <oldtopman> DopeGhoti: One of m friends likes ksh
#2272 [20:44] <aetherian> yay debian :)
#2273 [20:44] <DopeGhoti> some of my cow-orkers like zsh, but I'm a bash/sh guy
#2274 [20:44] <simon> Oh do any of you run a non-GUI OS?
#2275 [20:44] <DopeGhoti> well, I do most of my work in terminals, does that count?
#2276 [20:44] <simon> lol I'm not sure
#2277 [20:44] <DopeGhoti> 80-90% of the time, I'm using terminals and one GUI web browser
#2278 [20:45] <aetherian> pfft
#2279 [20:45] <aetherian> gui web broswer
#2280 [20:45] <simon> I heard there are a lot of distros of linux still going around that don't even have a GUI
#2281 [20:45] <DopeGhoti> what? I like Chrome.
#2282 [20:45] <aetherian> lynx :)
#2283 [20:45] <aetherian> (or some variation there-of)
#2284 [20:45] <DopeGhoti> simon: not that they don't have a GUI, but they don't install one by default
#2285 [20:45] <simon> Oh, that makes sense.
#2286 [20:45] <simon> Oh, I have an embarassing question regarding Flash
#2287 [20:46] <DopeGhoti> the option is always there. That's the great thing about Linux: options
#2288 [20:46] <simon> I managed to actually get flash onto my computer, which took me roughly 3 hours
#2289 [20:46] <simon> But now I have to click to play flash every time it shows up, which is way more than I thought it would be.
#2290 [20:47] <aetherian> le gasp, dope, why not use an open-source browser?
#2291 [20:47] <DopeGhoti> aetherian: s/chrome/chromium/
#2292 [20:47] <aetherian> oh phew
#2293 [20:47] <DopeGhoti> (and elinks, but still)
#2294 [20:48] <aetherian> I'll use "links" occasionally when I only have a terminal.
#2295 [20:50] <simon> Oh, wow, Chromium is working waaay better than Firefox.
#2296 [20:50] <simon> Thank God.
#2297 [20:50] <DopeGhoti> simon: sounds like you installed the opensource flash. I don't use flash much, but there might be some options for 'click-to-play' that you can set

#2303 [20:51] <simon> Well right now all I care about is that I have to press a play button to merely load the YouTube video box on Firefox and not on Chromium
#2304 [20:51] <DopeGhoti> heh
#2305 [20:51] <simon> But hey, on Windows, I agree that Chrome is WAY better than Firefox.

#2593 [23:19] <xales> ??> idresponse win/reinst
#2594 [23:19] <VoxelHead> idresponse: (win/reinst) You may need to reinstall the locally installed files that Minecraft puts into place.
#2595 [23:19] <VoxelHead> idresponse: (win/reinst) To do so, press Win+R, type in %AppData%, and press Enter. In the window that appears, open the .minecraft directory, and delete the bin directory that you see therein. Then, try running Minecraft again. Good luck!

#2624 [23:26] <relsqui> that's the spirit
#2625 [23:26] <idresponse> that's a bummer.
#2626 [23:26] <idresponse> really...
#2627 [23:26] <idresponse> i didn't think minecraft had -that- much requirements
#2628 [23:27] <xales> ??> idresponse requirements/lessrude
#2629 [23:27] <VoxelHead> idresponse: (requirements/lessrude) 1.5GiB of RAM (3 GiB if you want to run the server and client at the same time), a 2.4GHz or so per core CPU, and if you expect the world to get rather big, 100MB or so of hard drive space.
#2630 [23:27] <VoxelHead> idresponse: (requirements/lessrude) A server will use a lot of bandwidth, _per player_ because the world is in a constant state of flux.
#2631 [23:27] <xales> rather
#2632 [23:27] <idresponse> lessrude? :D
#2633 [23:27] <xales> ??> idresponse retro
#2634 [23:27] <VoxelHead> idresponse: (retro) Just because Minecraft's graphics have a retro styling does not mean that you can run the game on a Commodore 64.
#2635 [23:27] <VoxelHead> idresponse: (retro) Minecraft will make a computer work just as hard, and in some cases harder than, many other contemporary games. There is a reason that it allocates 1GB of RAM at startup.
#2636 [23:27] <idresponse> there's a rude versin of the requirements?
#2637 [23:27] <xales> yep
#2638 [23:27] <xales> ?? requirements
#2639 [23:27] <VoxelHead> requirements: Minecraft is a modern game, with modern requirements. It is also still under active development, so the code is by no means optimized (what do you expect? It's in beta!). As such, you will not be able to reasonably expect the game to run on a system with less than 1.5GiB of RAM- the game itself allocates 1GB at startup. You will also need a somewhat modern video card and relatively fast CPU.

#2651 [23:31] <idresponse> so... if i play single player is there a way i can dump what i've done and get on a multiplayer server and load it in there to show folks?
#2652 [23:31] <xales> yes
#2653 [23:32] <xales> ??> idresponse smp/savefiles
#2654 [23:32] <VoxelHead> idresponse: (smp/savefiles) Yes, you can use your single-player world as a mutliplayer map (or vice versa). Just make the world= line in server.properties match the name of the directory the world you want to use is in.
#2655 [23:32] <VoxelHead> idresponse: (smp/savefiles) To use an SMP save in single-player, copy or rename the world directory to "world#" (where '#' is a number from one to five), and use that save slot in single-player.
#2656 [23:33] <idresponse> okay
